NEW STOCK

Paper World has been fortunate enough to acquire a fabulous collection of Sydney tabloids extending from the 1940s to the late 1980s. These are now on our catalogue and complement our almost complete coverage of Sydney Morning Heralds for the same period.

We recently brought in from long-term storage our collection of The Australian and it's now available to purchase. Early editions are proving popular as 40th Birthday presents (The Australian was first published on 1/7/1964).

We have also extended our coverage of New Zealand newspapers and now have most dates covered between 1918 and 1982.

AUSTRALIA'S OLDEST BIRTHDAY NEWSPAPER!

PAPER WORLD: Turns the past into a present

In The Age on 14th October 2008, Andra Jackson reported:

Buggies, wagonettes, and phaetons still constituted the vehicle section of The Argus, the year Bea Riley was born.

That was more than a century ago, when Collingwoods Foy and Gibson store announced the arrival of a shipment of Remington bicycles - 22 pounds and 10 shillings for gentlemens bicycles and 23 pounds and 10 shillings for ladies bicycles.

Mrs Riley, who turned 112 yesterday, was presented with a copy of The Argus from the day she was born, by her son, Cliff, and daughter-in-law, Jueno.

Her birthday and October 13, 1896, makes her Australias oldest-known citizen, and the worlds 30th-oldest person.

That day the headlines focused on the slaughter of 1000 Armenians by Kurds on the Euphrates, and speculation that with the retirement of Britains Liberal Party leader, Lord Rosebery, Gladstone would resume the party leadership.

Told that The Argus back then sold for one penny, Mrs Riley remarked: "It is different now."
