The History of Paper World

Paper World founder, Alan Waters, initially expressed his passion for ephemera- curios, periodicals and historic documents- by collecting and trading old postcards.

While travelling in Europe in the mid-1980s, Alan came across a company supplying original newspapers from any date in the past. This business relied on the acquisition of ex-library volumes, which werent required due to the introduction of microfilm and digital storage methods. On his return to Australia, Alan found libraries here were doing likewise and began purchasing these unwanted volumes.

By 1995 these volumes, along with purchases from private collectors, reached a quantity Alan judged sufficient to commence trading. On the day he placed his first radio ad Alan was a one man band, taking phone orders, restoring the newspapers and dispatching them from his base at Melbourne's Chapel Street Bazaar.

Thanks to Alan's foresight and business acumen, the public can purchase newspapers from each Australian capital city - newspapers that would have otherwise been lost forever. To supply customers in each capital city, Paper World has a stock of approximately 600,000 newspapers and magazines, all of which are archived in a single North Melbourne warehouse.

Paper World has grown and expanded since Alan's retirement in 2003 and is continuing his legacy of providing the highest quality products and service in this unique business.
