- Ran classified advertisements rather than news on its front page until 1944, saving detailed news reports and photographs for the inside.
- Authoritative reporting of political, international and business news and a strong and often conservative analysis of issues.
- Presentation became livelier after the war, with increased use of bold headlines, large photographs, a specialised sports section and the inclusion of special supplements and magazines such as Saturday's Good Weekend.
- More recently, the introduction of colour has added another dimension to the paper.
